THINGS I USED TO DO

This is going to be from

a lonnnnng way back !!

Yes, way back in 1980 while living in Michigan, my daughter, Deb and I joined a ceramic class with a wonderful teacher. I had no idea what it involved but loved ceramic things.

Well, you take out a loan at your local bank and invest in all the things you have to have to be a professional in your ceramic world.

Oh yeah, first its paints.. and oh , so many colors
and then theres the sealers, stains, and the list goes on and on.

Oh I forgot ... this is a must !! all the little cleaning tools.
After you get allllll your paraphenalia and you walk in the first meeting like you know allllllllll about making ceramics
After introductions and all the " get to know " each other,

then Oh Joy !! you get to go all around and

chose your piece of greenware that you want to make into a "drop-dead" gorgeous piece of " Look What I Made" in ceramics.

But I must tell you up front..

BE VERY CAREFUL HOW YOU CLEAN YOUR GREENWARE !!!!

You all know how I am.. yep.. don't fiddle with the little "beginner pieces" ..no, you go for the gusto... I mean, chose

a piece that has all the little details and set yourself down in

your favorite chair.....( Deb right beside me.)

Now Deb is more ..how shall I say it...is more level headed, so she choses a very simple but delicate looking piece.
Oh the excitement of it all... I'm in ceramics and I'm gonna just love it !!

Well , I did love it ... but all did not go well at first.

This is about the third week and I had chosen to work on a set of the then popular " geese ladies".

I wanted mine to look like the expensive " Lladro`" pieces you see in jewlery and high end stores

O.k , piece number one went fairly well with the cleaning so on to number two and it was more delicate..

All of a sudden coming from my mouth was

"OH NO !!! RATS !! RATS !! RATS !!

.( my favorite expression when things arent going well ).

Deb says to me" Mom, what is wrong with you?"

I BROKE OFF A FINGER AND THE GOOSE BEAK !! RATS!! RATS!! NOW WHAT DO I DO ..I DON'T WANT TO START ALL OVER ON A NEW PIECE

Donna ( the teacher ) came over to me and said " What's wrong , dear ??"

..In a very immature whiney voice , I related my delima to her..

" Now don't you worry, dear, we'll have your goose back in good shape in no time.. So she takes him over to her area and put some kind of " goop" on his beak and "WAA-LAH" a new beak appears..

"Now just let him dry and he'll be good as new"

The whineys left and all was smiles again... but poor Deb was embarrassed and couldn't hold her little head up in the ceramics class .

NOT TO WORRY !! everything was fine.
Well , we went to this same ceramic class for about three years

We thoroughly enjoyed the classes and learned lots.. one thing is

you never get finished buying more and more paints..
And greenware, and containers to hold all your " stuff" you collect.

As time went by, we became more and more professional and made some beautiful churns with decals of wheat on them..

I made an egg basket that I'm going to change colors soon and bring it out of retirement..

Now isn't this a graceful note to end this story on ??

But to this day, when you mention our ceramic days, Deb shakes her head and tells her most embarrassing moments in

"DONNA'S CERAMIC CLASSES !!"

and I mean it's a doozy, too. I was just talking with my sister last week and I bragged about not having a cold in almost a year....you don't want to do that, NO way !! What did I get the next week?? well you can see for yourself . Just when I had so much sewing to do and all these cute spring patterns to make.. but I'll "beat this one !!" Yes sir .. if I can make it through the " MISSOURI ICE STORM OF 2009" I can beat a common head cold !! It won't be pleasant but neither was the ice storm and I'm still here ... but back off !! you don't want this one..

Gotta go for now... gotta get a new box of kleenex.. 'sniff"

ALMOST NORMAL AROUND HERE NOW !!

Yep, it's lookin' more and more like the old homestead around here these days..

There's bright lights in every room..

There's even a light in my refrigerator, yeah !!

and food... and even ice !!

Oh Yeah !!

Today, guess what !! A nice man came to my door and said

" You now have cable" ..

Duhh !! I DO ??

Yes mam, you sure do..

"Oh what do I do now?'"

Turn on your tv... that box in the corner!!

OH ! MERCY ME !!

If it ain't Ma and Pa Kettle" !!

Lawdy Me !! How did you do that ??...Well he 'splained it to me ..dang, that box been settin' there fer nigh onto a year and it ain't said a word till this nice man came to my door..

well fer gosh sakes .... I'm a liken' this little box.

GONNA SWITCH BACK TO NORMAL NOW !!

Been doin' some sewing after got power back in my sewing machine. Have a few really prim things on website recently.

Ordered some sawdust and made a set of prim ticking pillows with a "tuck doll" on them..

Also added a wooden hanger with two prim basil bags and two oregano bags and a small wooden primitive sign in the center.

Would be so neat in with your other prim hangings.

So stroll on down to the " Kountry" and have a" look-see".

I'll be watchin' for ya'...

HAPPY BLOGGIN'

IN THE DARK !!!

Here I am still in the dark .

Ya' know, I'm kinda gettin' used to this way of life.

Didn't say I like it, just gettin' used to it.

My eyes are gettin' used to the dark..like a mole..

Got my sunglasses handy so when the power comes back on( notice I said " when" ) I'll grab my sunglasses and put 'em on cause "moles" don't like the light.

Also got my antique oil lamp filled with oil, trimmed the wick and ready for the night.

Not gonna be like the "five foolish virgins" and be left behind.

I have the best neighbors beside me and across the street. They are brothers and they cleaned my drive so I could get my car out..

One brother bought a new generator and ran several extension cords from his generator through a small window next door to them and hooked up my computer and one light.. Now , isn't that a special neighbor.. When I get power gonna bake each one a huge pan of lasagna.. They love it.

Doesn't that look gooooood !!!

Makes me hungry and I can't bake ... well, you know I don't have power, YET !!

Been doin' some sewin' in the evenings when I have generator power and I just finished a new super grungy gal named Maggie and she is on my website , so go look her up.. she's for sale, ya know !!

Got two new stump families on there too. They are just the right thing to sit on a shelf or small table in with all your other prim thingys'.

Also gettin' all set for Spring with some bunny baskets.. not quiet there yet, but I'ma workin' on 'em.

well, guess that about wraps it up for today.

MISSOURI ICE STORM OF 2009

I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE AND HOPE I NEVER DO AGAIN !!

We were hit with the worse ice storm in the history of Missouri.
I live in the hardest hit part of it..which is Dunklin Country of the Bootheel of Missouri.

We have been without power for 9 days and our area sees no end in sight.

There were 1.3 million homes without power and some had no way of heating their homes. I lost everything in my freezer and refrigerator.

Fortunately, I have gas heat so I have had heat and water and food.

There is a local radio station that has donated one of their stations to opening up the phone lines to the public to call in for their needs, and or to assist with others needs.

There have been huge bucket type equipment coming in from several states to assist . Some of the states are Alabama, North Carolina, Louisana, Texas, Iowa and I hope I haven't left anyone out but it has been an outpouring of generousity from soooooo many people.

I am so " weepy" when I start thinking of all the people who need help and of all the kind and loving support being shown in our area.

If this doesn't sound like Maurine, I'll get back to my silly self one of these days.. But as for now, I'm still in awe of the devastation to the area, and it's not over yet.. But we're resiliant people and we will survive..

Please pray for all the ones that still doesn't have heat and have had to move into some type of shelter until such time as normalcy returns to the area.
